Why does Unichip use PiggyBack technology?
PiggyBack technology is proven technology, perfected by Unichip. The Unichip
PiggyBack system is designed to build on the existing engine computer, and all
the time and money put into it by the manufacturer. The Unichip refines the
factory programming by utilizing power left out intentionally by the
manufacturer, adding additional tuning points along the RPM curve for smoother
performance, and re-tuning for optional aftermarket performance components and
the power they can create with the Unichip.
Doesn’t an ECU reflash product do the same thing?
Not in this universe. Here is a breakdown of what a reflash does:
A reflash is limited by the hardware of the factory computer.
A reflash can only take advantage of what the hardware can do.
A reflash can be detected by a dealer, and if detected will void your warranty.
A reflash can be erased by your dealer.
Most reflash products can not be custom tuned
A reflash does not add the additional 92,000 tuning points to the maps that the
Unichip does.
You guys are too expensive. I’ll go make my own engine computer or go buy
brand B and tune the engine how I want.
You can try. You can very easily damage (AKA, blow up, grenade, toast, destroy, blow to
smithereens) your engine. We use laboratory methods to tune our applications on
a Class A dynamometer, road tested for an average for 500 miles or more in
various environmental conditions, then perfected back on the dyno. We then
publish all of our dyno results on our website.

Every application is also made Plug n’ Play compatible, so you will never need
to hack anything apart and soldier or destroy your perfectly good factory
wiring. Just in case you want to sell your car in one piece. You know, we look
out for you. We’re cool like that.
Doesn’t the factory computer work around a piggyback system?
Not with the advanced design of the Unichip. Proper programming ensures correct
open and closed loop operation. Every harness we make is designed for that
unique application. Road tested, and power improved.
What kind of modifications can the Unichip handle?
The Unichip will work for any application that has a Plug N’ Play Harness for
it. If its stock, the Unichip will add power. If you have other components such
as a cold air intake or performance exhaust, you will get even more power from
the Unichip. If you have uncommon components installed, you will get even more
power from the Unichip. Contact an Authorized Unichip Tuner for a quote on
custom-tuning your engine for uncommon modifications. You will get uncommonly
great power results from it.
Will the Unichip affect my fuel economy?
We tune the Unichip to delivery maximum performance when you want it, and
maximum economy when you want that instead. For example, mash the gas pedal and
you get lots of juice. Don’t mash the pedal, and you save some gas. Pretty
simple eh?
Will the Unichip affect the life of my MS6?
Adding a Unichip has no effect on the life of the MS6. On highly modified
MAZDASPEED 6s, the
Unichip may actually improve engine longevity by ensuring the correct air/fuel
ratio exists in the engine after the modifications have been made. On those same
sort of highly modified vehicles, the added power made possible by those
modifications may cause problems elsewhere in the vehicle (drive shaft,
transmission, connecting rods, etc…) and vehicle owners are responsible for
ensuring all components are able to handle the added power.
How long does the Unichip installation take?
On the MAZDASPEED 6, installation can be 10-15 minutes for the Plug n’ Play Unichip
. The MS6 factory computer is
located under the driver side dashboard by the clutch pedal. Once you find
your ECU, installing the Unichip is as easy as disconnecting and reconnecting
the clips on the OEM ECU.
Does the Unichip void my warranty?
Conditions that void or may void a vehicle’s warranty are specified in a law
called the Moss-Magnusson Act which stipulates dealers cannot void warranties
because vehicles have aftermarket parts. If the dealer can prove a particular
aftermarket the part caused a particular failure, they can disallow the claim
for that issue only. For example, if your engine fails, the dealer can’t refuse
to fix it because the car has aftermarket wheels. However, if the ECU has been
modified they may have a case and may deny the claim.
All ECU modifications can void a manufacturer’s warrantee if
the modification caused a failure, regardless of what aftermarket ECU
manufacturers may claim. If the dealer finds it in the car, and the warranty
claim is engine related, the dealer may have a case and may attempt to not honor
the claim under warranty. The dealer still has to prove the modification caused
the failure.
Unichip Product Warranty
For 90 days following the original owner’s purchase of a Unichip, Unichip of North America (UNA) warrants no other ECU product generates more power from a specific gasoline engine than a properly functioning, custom tuned Unichip in the specific vehicle for which it is tuned. If another ECU product generates more power from that engine within 90 days of the original owner’s purchase of the Unichip, the original owner can contact their Unichip dealer for a refund of all Unichip parts, Unichip installation charges, and Unichip custom tuning. Shipping, testing, dynometer costs and the cost of removing any UNA parts are specifically not covered by this warranty and will not be refunded to the owner.
To claim a refund, owners must provide dynamometer proof another ECU product produced more power when installed on the specific vehicle and that vehicle and all of its parts were in an identical condition other than the ECU enhancement. Three repeatable dynamometer tests must be performed using the Unichip and three repeatable tests using the other ECU product. The average of the three tests performed on each product shall constitute that product’s score for determining power. The same technician, using the same dynamometer in an identical condition with the same settings, must perform all test runs. All environmental conditions including ambient and IAT temperature and pressure altitude and the vehicle’s cooling system temperatures and drive train temperatures must also be identical for all six runs. IAT and Coolant temperature data logged information for each run is required. The vehicle must also use the same fuel for all six tests. UNA reserves the rights to, at UNA’s exclusive discretion, re-tune the Unichip involved in a performance warranty claim at no cost to the customer making the claim or to provide a warranty refund; if after a retune, the Unichip still makes less power than another product, the owner will receive a refund IAW this warranty statement.
All UNA parts, including Unichip piggyback computers, driver modules, and harnesses also carry a limited warranty against manufacturer’s defect. This warranty is valid for the original owner only, for one year from the date of purchase regardless of the installation date. UNA only warrants Unichip products sold by an authorized UNA reseller. If a UNA product is found defective, the original purchaser may contact the reseller from whom they purchased the product for a replacement component at no cost. Shipping, testing, dynamometer costs, and the cost of removing any UNA parts are specifically not covered by this warranty and will not be refunded to the owner.
The above warranties are expressly made in lieu of any and all other warranties, express or implied, including any warranty on the engineering or design of the goods as well as the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
Any and all warranties on the Unichip are void if: 1) the custom installation or custom tuning of the Unichip was performed by anyone other than a UNA qualified dealer or tuner, 2) anyone other than a qualified UNA tuner or dealer alters or modifies or attempts to alter or modify any of the electronic data within the Unichip or 3) the UNA product is used for anything other than its intended purpose or is physically or electrically damaged.
For all warranty claims, the product return shipping date stamp must be within the appropriate time limitation from the time of purchase. Additionally, proof of purchase in the form of either a properly completed warranty card or a sales receipt indicating both the date of sale and owners name is required and is the owner’s responsibility. Customers with hard-wire installations are responsible for providing proof of when and where the installation was performed. Warranty claims will be denied if the customer cannot provide proof of purchase.
UNA is not liable for incidental, consequential, or punitive damages attributable directly or indirectly to the Unichip or UNA’s actions or inactions with respect to the Unichip. UNA is also specifically not responsible or liable for damage of any kind: 1) to a vehicle into which UNA products are installed or 2) resulting from the use of a vehicle equipped with any UNA products.
UNA believes high performance driving should be confined to appropriate venues such as racetracks or organized closed course events such as Autocross competitions, and does not sanction or participate in any street racing or other illicit driving activity.
